Why are my nails brittle and breaking?

Help for nails that are brittle and breaking!

Nothing is more frustrating than nails that constantly break!

Brittle nails that break a lot are typically very dry. Some other reasons could be:

  • Age (sucks getting old, right?!)
  • Iron deficiency
  • Lacking Vitamin B
  • Hypothyroidism.
  • Using too much hand sanitizer

Though having nails that break all the time is annoying, I do have help for your nails!  The way to start combatting the brittle, cracking, and nails that break all the time is with moisture.

Moisturizing your nails, especially your cuticles is the secret sauce to healthy nails!

When your nails are in the brittle and breaking stage, you cannot moisture too much.

Use a moisturizer on your hands every time you wash them. Every single time! I highly recommend choosing a cream-based moisturizer over lotion. Lotions tend to be lighter and when your nails are in this state of dryness, you do not want to deny them a rich moisturizer.

Use a cuticle oil/cream every day – twice a day. Apply it at least once during the day and at night before bed.

These are my favorite nail care products for nail health...

Cuccio Cuticle Oil
I leave this oil next to my bed and apply before bed. It’s not super greasy and fast drying.

Dr. Hunters Cuticle Cream and Badger Cuticle Care

Toss one of these Cuticle Balms into your purse so you have access to use during the day. Both smell amazing and easy to use throughout the day.

Another must do is to wear gloves when doing dishes!

I’ve been using non-latex, fabric lined gloves for over 40 years and I couldn’t imagine not using them. Especially since I have eczema. These gloves are my new go-to and are super cute!

Manicure advice for my Color Street clients:

  • Wear your Color Street for 10 days
  • Remove with a non-acetone polish remover. I use this brand. If your polish is glitter, using polish remover clips are especially helpful.
  • Take a day or two (no more than 2 days) without polish and moisture the heck out of your nails. I love to use Hard As Hoof, in addition to using cuticle oil and balm.
  • Then, apply another Color Street manicure.
  • Continue to use cuticle oil/balm twice a day (wait 1hr after applying Color Street)
  • Repeat

If you’re not a Color Street client, let’s talk!
